Whoopsie Chocolate Cake Crumble and Vanilla Buttercream Trifle

Chocolate cake trifle with layers of vanilla buttercream and rainbow sprinkles (of course)

You know when you’re testing out a tried and true recipe but in a different size set of pans? Well if you don’t, let me tell ya… sometimes they runneth over and don’t work. This means you have to rework your original plans (that included the cake being balanced and pretty) and make new ones. Ergo, this recipe was born. It’s simply a mixture of my favorite chocolate cake recipe with the ever-so-simple and delicious vanilla buttercream, just with crumbly cake layered in a dish instead. I mean… it’s honestly amazing.

Because when life gives you un-sexy cake tests, you make trifle.

Equipment

Yields: 10-12 servings (depending on dish size)

Ingredients

Directions:

Place your baked chocolate cake into a bowl and crumble with your hands - simply rub your hands together to break up the cake into chunky crumbles.

Place your vanilla buttercream into a piping bag (no nozzle required).

In your dish, place a layer of crumbled cake, top it with a spiral of buttercream, and repeat until your final buttercream layer hits the top of the glassware (or near). *Salt bae* the top with sprinkles.

Voila! I mean let’s be honest… it looks cute as hell. Maybe I planned this all along?
