Easy Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce Recipe

I’m not always a condiment gal, but if someone asked me what my favorite condiment is, it’d be this homemade hot fudge sauce. There’s just something about a brownie sundae that’s absolutely drowning in thick, fudgy, chocolate sauce, ya know?

The perk for all of us is how easy it is to make this at home, and it tastes better than anything you could ever buy in the store. Plus, it keeps beautifully in the freezer.

A little hot fudge for now, a little for later. Perfect for those evenings when you want a warm chocolate chip cookie, a scoop of ice cream, and a river of chocolate.

HOMEMADE HOT FUDGE SAUCE

In this recipe, we’re using both cocoa powder and chopped dark chocolate. The cocoa powder adds a rich chocolate flavor while also helping to thicken the sauce. The dark chocolate brings home that fudgy bite and texture.

I could literally eat this whole jar, just straight up with a spoon. But I won’t do that… cause that would be wild… right?

Why is there vanilla in a chocolate sauce? There is rarely a time when vanilla doesn’t enhance a bake, but especially with chocolate, it really makes those rich flavors pop while adding warmth to the sauce.

INGREDIENTS

  • Heavy cream: Creates the rich, silky base of the hot fudge sauce.
  • Brown sugar, packed: Adds deep sweetness and helps give the sauce a fudgy texture.
  • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the sauce and balances the bitterness of the chocolate and cocoa.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: Provides concentrated chocolate flavor and helps thicken the sauce.
  • Salt: Enhances the chocolate flavor while balancing the sweetness.
  • Butter: Adds richness, shine, and a smooth finish.
  • Dark chocolate, finely chopped: Melts into the sauce for extra chocolate flavor and fudginess.
  • Vanilla extract: Rounds out the overall flavor of the sauce.

Can I use chocolate chips instead of a chocolate bar? You can! I prefer chopping a chocolate bar since it melts more smoothly into the sauce, but chocolate chips will work fine.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE HOT FUDGE SAUCE

In a medium pot, whisk together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until evenly combined. Then whisk in the heavy cream until smooth.

Place your pot over medium heat and cook, whisking frequently, until the hot fudge sauce comes to a gentle simmer and the sugars fully dissolve. As it heats, the mixture will darken and become glossy and smooth.

Allow the sauce to simmer for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent any scorching. The sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cooks.

Remove the pan from the heat and immediately stir in the butter until fully melted and mixed in. Add the finely chopped dark chocolate and stir until your homemade hot fudge sauce is silky smooth and completely melted.

Stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined. The vanilla really makes the chocolate flavor pop!

Pour your hot fudge sauce into a jar or heat-safe container and let cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. As the sauce cools, it will thicken into a rich, pourable fudge consistency perfect for ice cream, brownies, cheesecakes, and sundaes.

To reheat, warm the sauce in a pot over low heat, stirring until smooth and loosened. You can also microwave it in 5–10 second intervals, stirring between each, until it reaches your desired consistency.

TIPS & VARIATIONS

  1. I used dark chocolate for the perfect fudge flavor, but you can swap it for milk chocolate or semi-sweet if you want something a little lighter
  2. Whisk your chocolate sauce constantly when it’s on the stove to prevent anything from burning. You want the liquid to be moving to ensure it properly melts and thickens.
  3. This homemade hot fudge sauce is delicious poured over cheesecake, topping your brownie or cookie sundaes, or even paired with your favorite chocolatey bread!

STORING HOT FUDGE SAUCE

This easy homemade chocolate sauce will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, stored in an airtight container or jar. You can also store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.

If I’m not planning to use it all, I like to store it in small batches in the freezer, so I don’t have to thaw more than I’ll use when the craving strikes!
