4 Cute Towns Near Asheville, NC (Within 35 Minutes)
Asheville is one of the most well-known towns in North Carolina and a highly visited tourist destination. The beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the funky art scene, incredible food offerings, I mean… Asheville has justly made a name for itself. But we’re here to talk about these four cute towns near Asheville, NC.
Because sometimes the big names can overshadow the truly cute. Lucky for us, all of these towns are within 35 minutes or less of Asheville. So if you want to plant yourself in the area and branch out on day trips to these spots, I highly recommend it. It also makes it so you don’t have to pack/unpack (assuming you’re not a local).
My mom and I spent 5 days around various towns (plus Asheville – yeah, we packed it in), and these four were my favorite.
How to Help Western NC Recover
As many know, Asheville and much of Western North Carolina were hit hard by Hurricane Helene last year. The recovery will take years, if not more, with some towns (like Marshall) almost getting swept away in the flooding, while others had a little more luck. If you want to learn more about how to support Western NC, check out this list of resources.

Hendersonville, NC
A bustling mountain town that, when cloudy, almost makes you forget you’re in one. This is possibly the largest of the four, and you could easily spend a day exploring (and peeping at the local real estate listings). Besides the downtown, there is also an array of eats and activities nearby, making it easy to spend a cool long weekend. Here were some of my favorites:
- 1898 Waverly Inn: If you’re looking for a cute inn experience, this one checks out. It’s affordable and cozy, plus an easy walk into town. The breakfast was good (nothing groundbreaking), but the upgrade for breakfast is a great price, plus you get an afternoon snack/beverage the day you check in as well! Will also note that I slept like a baby on that bed.
- McFarlan Old Fashioned Bakery: I will admit I was skeptical when I saw the size of the bakery case (it big), since I’m more confident in the freshness of a small batch, but I was proven wrong. My mom got this giant cookie (can’t remember the name) that was almost a cross between a shortbread and a sugar cookie – 10/10. I wanted to try the cinnamon roll and the peanut butter cookie. My cookie wasn’t great, but the CINNAMON ROLL, ohemgeee I will dream about her. Also, the pricing for most was pretty exceptional.
- Wag!: If you have a pet, stop by this boutique. Packed with lots of quality finds for your cat or pup.
- The Joy of Books: Small used bookstore. I mean, I see “bookstore” and it’s an immediate yes. You can rarely go wrong.
- Narnia Studios: Quirky shop where I purchased a soap rock. The owner should be getting major commission cause I would likely have walked right by, but now I can’t wait until my other soap runs out so I can use my soap rock!
- Splurge Just a Little…: GREAT shop! Really well-priced local art and lots of other home items, knick-knacks, and more. Filled with good finds without being overwhelmingly full.
- The Book and Bee Cafe and Tea: I didn’t love this place, but I really loved the mushroom soup. I’m both a massive afternoon tea fan AND a classic literary lover, so bring the two together and I was stoked. My mom said her salad was a bit bland. I got the soup/sandwich combo, and I didn’t love the grilled cheese (which, you can get some GOOD grilled cheese, OK. Don’t judge me). We got the pot of tea with two scones, and the serving of jam, cream, and lemon curd was a JOKE for two, albeit small, scones. Also, the scones were very dry. I left it here cause I would like to give it another chance, just to do one of their desserts with a pot of tea. So until we return… I’ll keep it here as a maybe.

Flat Rock, NC
This is a sneeze-and-you ’ll-miss-it situation of a town. It’s right outside of Sky Top Orchard, where I’ve been going to pick apples in the late summer/early fall since I was a kid. Like literally 7 minutes. And yet, had never been until now. We’d already eaten, so we didn’t get a chance to try any of the few restaurants, but we’ll definitely be back (cause that BBQ smelled goooood.).
I really liked Dogwood, a gift shop with trinkets, kitchen items, art, and more. Oh, and The Wrinkled Egg has sister bunnies that you can pet if they’re not sleeping. So definitely stop in there.

Black Mountain, NC
Clearly, I’ve been living under a giant boulder, because I hadn’t heard of Black Mountain until a few years ago. When we first pulled in, I wasn’t sure what to expect (it was also quite overcast, so we weren’t getting those mountain views). It turned out to be one of my favorite towns outside of Asheville. You really get the meat of the best shops on Cherry Street, in my opinion, but there are some goodies on the other streets as well. Some spots I can’t wait to go back to:
- The Laundry Collective: I absolutely LOVE everything about a refillery, and this one doesn’t disappoint. A range of goods from towels and soaps to quality odds and ends, like a tongue scraper. They also have a little coffee shop if you want to order a drink and have a sit or browse and sip.
- North Carolina Glass Center: Cool space where you can see students working on glass projects and check out some of their art. Can find some unique glass gifts here as well.
- Dripolator: Really good coffee and tea spot. Would definitely go back for another London Fog. My mom hadn’t tried matcha before this, and really loved her drink. Also, some great-looking baked goods in the case (we tried the buckeye brownie, and it was super tasty).
- The Enchanted Oak: I honestly fell in love with a few pieces of art hanging on the wall here, but the wallet needs to grow a little first. To be clear, it was affordably priced, but I just needed to calm down my spending. Anyways, great shop, smells incredible as soon as you walk in.
- Morning Sky Pottery: Shop set up on the deck (I’m very curious how they close up for the night) featuring works from a variety of local artists. Great place to find smaller home items – mugs, soap holders, etc, and fun little bits – I got a yogi person.
- Chifferobe Home & Garden: Corner shop packed with an array of goods. From fresh wreaths to jewelry, antiques, and more.
- Antiques on Sutton: This is an example of a perfect antique shop. Not overwhelming, clearly curated pieces (not an estate sale dump iykyk), and well priced.
- Sassafras on Sutton: Perfect bookstore to get lost in with a coffee shop inside.
- Sarah Sunshine Pottery: Little pottery shop, perfect for a peruse.
- Taco Billy: This is probably a chain, but I thought it was really good. I got the Yard Bird chicken taco, and my mom got the Lunch Lady, and we both really liked it. I will say I tasted no mango slaw… was more like a regular slaw (which, as a mayo hater, I didn’t love, but appreciated the crunch). The chips and queso were also really yummy.
- Seven Sisters Gallery: Sometimes when I see the word “gallery,” I think “look no touch,” but this is more of a large shop, featuring works from lots of artists that you can buy. I got a little dish from Cinders Artistry that I love.

Marshall, NC
If you enjoy a small town with a pretty drive along the river and mountain backdrops as you walk along Main Street, Marshall is for you. They are still very much in recovery mode as of my visit last week (August 2025), post-Hurricane Helene. But the shops that are open, and there are quite a few, are really good ones.
I’ve listed some of my favorite shops in Marshall here, and I can’t wait to go back again as more open!
