It took me way too long to realize what a hidden gem this little town is, tucked away in the mountains of Western North Carolina. If you’re looking for the perfect small-town weekend, book yourself a Black Mountain, NC getaway.

There is so much to see and do around the area, but even if you just stayed in and explored the town itself, you have the making of a perfect few days. As someone who grew up outside of Charlotte, NC, I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of this little escape until just a few years ago. Now it’s gonna be a regular retreat.

Charming Historic Town Filled with Shops and Good Eats

When you arrive in Black Mountain, you’ll notice the town itself is situated in a rather picturesque location. Mountains frame the streets (unless you’ve arrived on a cloudy day), providing both people and nature watching opportunities.

There are also an array of shops in town – some of my favorites are off of Cherry Street, where you can easily spend a day or two, strolling and exploring. If you love a refillery vibe like me, check out The Laundry Collective. Grab a coffee from their shop and peruse an array of home goods to help lower your waste.  Then head to Sassafras on Sutton for your next favorite read (and potentially another hot beverage from their in-shop cafe).

Stop into the Dripolator for a hot beverage and a peek at their bakery case. I had a London Fog and came back later for the buckeye brownie. Absolutely as good as it sounds. There are a few spots to grab a bite at, depending on the time of day and craving. I had the Yard Bird chicken taco from Taco Billy’s and was very impressed (plus the queso, of course). Though I will note, I didn’t love the mayo vibe in the coleslaw.

Appreciate Local Artists

If you’re like me and love to peruse and support local artists, your getaway to Black Mountain has a haul waiting for you. There is an array of shops in town featuring everything from pottery to painting to glassworks.

Pop into the North Carolina Glass Center to see a range of art while catching some students working on their projects. You can also sign up for one-day or multi-week classes!

If you love pottery, I highly recommend a stop by Morning Sky Pottery. The shop itself is mostly outdoors, with a range of options set up across the deck. Makes me wonder how they set up in the colder months…? Also, Sarah Sunshine Pottery is a great little shop to pop into across the street.

For those who love a little bit of everything, head over to The Enchanted Oak. The smells of the shop will hit you as soon as you walk in the door (in a good way). Plus, there are all kinds of knick-knacks, soaps, and a variety of art pieces. Then head to Seven Sisters Gallery (more of a large shop than a gallery), featuring a range of local artists and 100% woman-owned. We love that!

Spend Time in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway, less than 15 minutes outside of town, for a beautiful mountain drive. Note that many parts along the parkway are still closed due to Hurricane Helene recovery, but what you can see is always pretty. You can check out any road closures here

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the connector between the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Shenandoah National Park. It’s easy to get on and off the parkway, stopping at various towns along the way. There are also lots of picturesque overlooks and picnic spots.

How to Help Western NC Recover

As many know, Asheville and much of Western North Carolina were hit hard by Hurricane Helene last year. The recovery will take years, if not more, with some towns (like Marshall) almost getting swept away in the flooding, while others had a little more luck. Easily Explore Asheville and Other Nearby Towns

If you’re looking for a change of scenery, head over to Asheville to explore the great shops, eats, and art scene. The drive from Black Mountain to Asheville takes less than 20 minutes, perfect for an easy lunch or a full day of adventuring.

Additional towns to explore nearby include Hendersonville, Marshall, and many more to the west. Check out these 4 Cute Towns Outside of Asheville! Or head east to Blowing Rock and Boone. Honorable mention to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, though at this time, Lake Lure is still in full recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

Treasure Hunt for Your Next Great Antique Find

Loads of antique gold are waiting for you in your Black Mountain, NC getaway. I was really impressed by Antiques on Sutton in particular. I love a cute, clearly curated shop that is well laid out without being what can feel like an estate sale.

From there, walk down the corner to Chifferobe Home & Garden for a mix of goods, including some unique antique finds, jewelry, handmade wreaths, and more!

I hope you have the best time during your Black Mountain, NC getaway, exploring this adorable little mountain town! You can check out my full video here!
