Easy Oreo Dirt Dip from Scratch

I will never get tired of eating dirt. Oreo dirt that is, of course. While I’ve found that I am a fan of the garden, and am excitedly watching all the tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans sprout, that’s as close as I want to get to nature’s dirt. When thinking through ways to breathe new yumminess into this childhood classic, an Oreo dirt dip from scratch sounded like an excellent idea.

Instead of using Cool Whip and chocolate pudding mix, like you do in the classic dirt recipe, we’re using cream cheese, heavy cream, milk, powdered sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and Oreos. Pretty soon, I’ll turn this into a homemade dirt recipe, but for now, we’re keeping it a little thicker for the perfect dip consistency.

Veggies aren’t the only ones who want to dive into a delicious pool of something, ok?! This dirt dip makes the perfect sweet treat for snacking plates, paired with pretzels, graham crackers, nuts, and fresh fruit. I think my current favorite combo is a dipped fresh strawberry. Though I do need to give a slightly softened marshmallow and maybe a graham cracker a try… Dirt s’mores dare I say?!

If you’re also a dirt lover like me, these Dirt Tea Cakes filled with a classic dirt recipe in a dome of chocolate are a fun (American-British) twist on the original recipe! Plus, they make for a good challenge.

WHAT IS OREO DIRT?

A childhood classic made with crushed Oreos, Cool Whip, and instant chocolate pudding. It’s basically the lazy man’s mousse packed with Oreo crumbles (and delicious). You’ll likely find it served in a cup with worms coming out. Gummy worms, of course! Though I prefer mine on the side (and sour) since I always hated how the fruitiness would mess with the flavor of the part of my chocolate dirt cup it touched.

In an effort to make more homemade and less pre-packaged (though no shade if you love the classic recipe!), we’re making this Oreo dirt dip from scratch. Most likely, you’ll have all of these ingredients on hand. If not, it’s an easy pick-up from the store. Also, quick emphasis on dip, as this is a thicker version meant to be paired with your favorite snacks or fresh fruit. But, no judgment if you want to take a spoon straight to it.

How should I serve this Oreo dirt dip? Grab a small bowl and fill it with the dip. Place it on a tray or plate surrounded by all your favorite snacks. Think graham crackers, pretzels, pineapple, strawberries, almonds, oh, and Oreos (cause you can never have enough)!

INGREDIENTS

  • Oreos: Because everything is better with a soggy chocolate cookie, duh
  • Cream Cheese: Helps create that thick dip vibe
  • Powdered Sugar: For a little sweetness
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Bringing the chocolatey goodness
  • Heavy Cream: The fluff for both the dip and the whipped cream, we fold it into it
  • Milk: To thin it out just a touch

HOW TO MAKE OREO DIRT DIP FROM SCRATCH

Start by crushing your Oreos in a zip-seal bag with a rolling pin or with a food processor. If using a food processor, just lightly pulse a few times. You want a mixture of fine crumbs and some chunky crumbles. Set aside while you prepare the rest of your dip.

Add your softened cream cheese to a bowl and beat with a mixer to smooth it out. Then sift in your dry ingredients – powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder – before beating until fully combined. Add in your milk and mix, this will help to smooth out your mixture. Pour in a ¼ cup of your heavy cream and beat for 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.

Save ¼ cup of your Oreos and add the rest to the bowl with your chocolate dip. Fold them in until fully combined. In a separate bowl, make your whipped cream. Whip together your remaining heavy cream and powdered sugar until you have stiff peaks.

Fold your whipped cream evenly into your chocolate dip, transfer to a container, and top with the remaining Oreo crumbs. Store in the fridge for at least two hours. This will help it to set, the flavors to meld, and the Oreos to soften (my favorite part!).

When ready, transfer to a serving dish alongside your favorite dippable snacks!

TIPS & VARIATIONS

  1. Add in mini chocolate chips or white chocolate for extra chocolatey bites! Just stir them in when you add in your crushed Oreos.
  2. Be careful not to overwhip your whipped cream. You want it stiff, since you’ll knock some air out of it as you fold it into your chocolate, but too firm and it’ll be greasy.
  3. Crush your Oreos so you have a blend of fine and chunky pieces. This creates the perfect texture throughout your dip.
  4. Save some extra crushed Oreos for the top of your dip, right before you’re ready to put it in the fridge. This will allow the topping to soften (but not as much as the pieces already mixed in) while it chills. Makes for the perfect texture!

MAKING AHEAD & STORING

This dip comes together in under 10 minutes, making it incredibly easy to prep in advance. Once made, store it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. The dip will keep for up to three days in the fridge. Be sure to give it a good stir before serving!

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Mixer
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Spatula
  • Food Processor or Zip-top Bag
  • Rolling Pin

Ingredients

  • 18 Oreos
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • ¾ cup heavy cream divided
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Place the Oreos in a zip-top bag or food processor. Crush them until they resemble small coarse rocks. You want a mixture of fine crumbs with some larger chunks for texture.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with a mixer until smooth
  • Sift in ½ cup of powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder, beat until fully combined
  • Add in the milk and beat until smooth. This helps thin out the cream cheese mixture and creates a silky texture.
  • Gradually pour in the ¼ cup heavy cream and continue to beat until the mixture becomes thick and creamy (about 2-3 minutes)
  • Fold in your Oreos, setting aside ¼ cup for the top
  • In a separate bowl, add your remaining ½ cup of heavy cream and sift over your tablespoon of powdered sugar, whip until you have stiff peaks
  • Fold your whipped cream into your chocolate mixture until combined. Top with the Oreos your saved and cover
  • Place in the fridge to chill for at least 2 hours to set. This allows the flavors to blend and time for the Oreos to soften
  • Transfer to a serving dish and top with the remaining crushed Oreos
  • Serve with fruit, pretzels, graham crackers, or any of your favorite snacks, and enjoy!
