
Rooibos Hibiscus Tea Rich in Antioxidants & Caffeine-Free
I love a cozy hot beverage, and combined with some natural wellness, I’m absolutely in. This rooibos hibiscus tea comes packed with wellness goodies like antioxidants, perfect for cold-weather seasons or anytime you want a hot sip.
The first time I had rooibos was when I was traveling in Cape Town, South Africa. It comes from the rooibos bush, native to the country, and every time I smell it, I’m thrown back to loads of happy memories.
Its natural health benefits, alongside the hibiscus leaves, make this tea even tastier in my opinion. Though, to be very clear, I am not a medical professional, so all insights into the health benefits, from antioxidants to heart health, I’ve learned from other sources.

ROOIBOS HIBISCUS TEA
Packing lots of nature’s goodies into one single-serve tea recipe. Made with uniquely sweet South African rooibos and tart, dried hibiscus leaves.
This cozy beverage is spiced with ginger, cinnamon, and a splash of vanilla, then strained into your favorite mug. The perfect hot sip, packed with antioxidants and completely caffeine-free.
Is bag/sachet tea okay for this recipe? Yes! I prefer loose-leaf, but you can easily swap in 1 rooibos tea bag and approximately ½ of a hibiscus tea bag.

INGREDIENTS
- Rooibos loose leaf: forms the naturally caffeine-free base of the tea while providing a smooth, earthy flavor and antioxidants
- Hibiscus loose leaf: adds a vibrant ruby color, light tartness, and additional antioxidant support
- Water: extracts the flavors and beneficial compounds from the tea leaves and spices
- Ground ginger: brings warming spice and supports digestion
- Cinnamon: adds subtle sweetness and depth while enhancing the tea’s cozy flavor profile
- Vanilla extract: softens the spices and rounds out the herbal elements
- Honey or maple syrup: balances the tartness and spice with natural sweetness
Can I add milk to this tea? I wouldn’t recommend it. Hibiscus is highly acidic, and your milk will likely curdle and separate as soon as you pour it in.
HOW TO MAKE ROOIBOS HIBISCUS TEA
Add all of the ingredients except the honey or maple syrup to a small pot and place it over high heat, stirring occasionally. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Once boiling, turn off the heat, cover the pot with a lid, and let the rooibos hibiscus tea steep for 5 minutes. Set a fine strainer over your mug and carefully strain the caffeine-free herbal tea into it.
Stir in honey or maple syrup to taste, and enjoy!

3 reasons you’ll love this antioxidant-rich tea
TIPS & VARIATIONS
- Do not add milk to this tea. Hibiscus is naturally very acidic, so your milk will likely curdle as soon as you pour it into your mug.
- If you don’t have loose-leaf tea, you can swap in one rooibos tea bag and half of a hibiscus bag. I’d still recommend cutting open the bags and pouring the contents directly into the pot, versus steeping in the bags.
- Adding the spices to the pot to boil helps deepen the flavor. This does mean you strain most of them out after the tea has steeped. I like this, so the tea isn’t gritty, but you’re welcome to add a dash more of ginger or cinnamon directly to your mug after you’ve strained out your tea.
- If you have fresh ginger, you can swap in just under 1 tsp of freshly grated for the ground ginger.
- Since this tea does have a little tang from the hibiscus, adding a little natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup is a great way to balance some of that flavor.
- In addition to enjoying hot, easily serve this tea cold, over ice, or store (once cooled) in an ice cube tray for a flavorful boost to any future iced drinks!
MAKING AHEAD & STORING
If you want to make a larger batch of rooibos hibiscus tea or prepare some in advance, just follow the instructions below and strain into a heat-safe jar. Allow to cool completely with the lid off before storing.
Store your prepped tea, covered, in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat when ready to drink (or serve cold!).

Ingredients
