Funfetti Mug Cake (Easy 5-Minute Microwave Recipe)
While I usually gravitate towards a chocolate vanilla balance, be that a soft-serve swirl ice cream cone or my favorite birthday cake. My exception to the rule is funfetti, and since I love a single-serve treat, we gotta have a funfetti mug cake!
My biggest call-out with a mug cake is… It’s a microwaveable cake in a cup or bowl. Don’t expect to see a cake similar to what would pop out of the oven.
This is a quick, simple way to satisfy that vanilla sprinkle craving, with very low effort.

FUNFETTI MUG CAKE
Those giant coffee cups are coming in handy (outside of that hefty morning brew). This microwaveable treat is what mug cake dreams are made of, as it’s so light, fluffy, and comes together in just minutes.
Top with vanilla frosting, if desired (I mean, always), and even more sprinkles!
My cake batter looks liquidy, is that normal? Yep! It will puff and rise a lot as it bakes in the microwave, so make sure it has plenty of room to grow in your mug.

INGREDIENTS
- All-purpose flour: provides structure for the mug cake.
- Sugar: for sweetness and coloring.
- Baking powder: leavens the cake for a light, fluffy texture.
- Salt: enhances flavor and balances sweetness.
- Milk: adds moisture and helps bind ingredients.
- Butter: enriches flavor and contributes to a tender crumb.
- Vanilla extract: adds that classic flavor.
- Rainbow sprinkles: give fun, colorful bursts throughout the cake.
- Powdered sugar: sweetens and thickens the optional frosting.
Can I use oil instead of butter? Yep! I prefer the flavor the butter gives, but you can easily swap it for a neutral oil like canola or vegetable if that’s what you have on hand.
HOW TO MAKE A FUNFETTI MUG CAKE
In a microwave-safe mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth.
Gently fold in the rainbow sprinkles for a colorful, fun touch. Microwave on high for 45–60 seconds, until the top looks set but remains soft and fluffy.
Let your easy funfetti mug cake cool for about a minute before enjoying, or top with a quick vanilla frosting for extra yum. To make the frosting, beat room-temperature butter with powdered sugar, add a splash of vanilla, and spread over the cake, thinning with a little milk if needed.

TIPS & VARIATIONS
- If you don’t have any sprinkles, you can easily omit them for a vanilla mug cake. However, sprinkles do make the world more fun.
- It might feel tedious, but I recommend sifting the dry ingredients into your mug. You don’t want pockets of flour in your cake, ya know?
- You can use oil or butter in this recipe. I prefer the taste of the butter, but oil will work as well
- Don’t worry if the cake batter seems on the wet side. It will puff up nicely and create a moist cake
MAKING AHEAD & STORING
Once made, you can store your mug cake covered at room temperature for a day or in the fridge for up to two days.
