Oreo Muddy Buddies (Cookies and Cream Puppy Chow)
When I was visiting Asheville, NC recently, I saw a packet of Oreo muddy buddies in this snack-foods store. As an avid Oreo fan, I immediately thought: I need to recreate that.
I remember the first time I had puppy chow, at a friends house in middle school, and I was absolutely delighted. It’s crunchy, it’s sweet, plus, there’s often a balancing tang.
Whoever first came up with the muddy buddies combo, you is a genius.

OREO MUDDY BUDDIES
This is a six-ingredient recipe featuring a base of Rice Chex cereal (off-brand will do, of course), coated in a mixture of white chocolate, the creamy center of a few Oreos, a little bit of butter, and some salt. This will be the sweet “cream” element of this cookies-and-cream puppy chow.
Once it’s tossed with the wet element, we’ll finish with that classic powdered sugar coating but this time mixed with Oreo crumbs. It’s an Oreo-lovers snicky-snack delight.
It’s important to melt your chocolate slowly. White chocolate is notoriously finicky, so melting it in quick bursts, stirring, and then returning to the microwave is the best way to get a smooth chocolate coating.

INGREDIENTS
- Rice Chex cereal: forms the crisp base that holds the chocolate coating without getting soggy
- White chocolate chips: create the creamy, sweet coating that binds everything together
- Oreos: adds rich cookies-and-cream flavor and speckled texture
- Unsalted butter: helps the chocolate melt smoothly and prevents it from seizing
- Salt: balances the sweetness and sharpens the Oreo flavor
- Powdered sugar: lightly coats the finished muddy buddies for sweetness and that signature shake-and-toss finish
How do you prevent your muddy buddies from getting crushed? When combining the ingredients, stir gently. This will ensure the Rice Chex stays crisp and intact.
HOW TO MAKE OREO MUDDY BUDDIES
Place the Rice Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl and set it aside while you prepare the coating. Now the cereal is ready to be evenly coated as soon as the white chocolate mixture is smooth.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate, Oreo cream filling, and butter in short intervals, stirring between each burst until fully smooth. Stir in the salt to balance the sweetness and enhance the cookies-and-cream flavor.
Pour the melted white chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex cereal and gently fold until each piece is evenly coated. Take care not to crush the cereal so the muddy buddies stay light and crisp.
In a separate bowl, combine the Oreo crumbs and powdered sugar until evenly mixed. Sprinkle the mixture over the coated cereal and stir until all pieces are fully covered, creating the classic Oreo muddy buddies finish.

TIPS & VARIATIONS
- Melt the chocolate slowly to prevent it from seizing (or burning). White chocolate is known to be slightly high maintenance, so take your time melting it.
- Gently mix your ingredients with the Rice Chex to prevent crushing it. We want big chunky pieces!
- Work quickly once you toss with your white chocolate mixture, so it stays sticky for the crumb powder to set on.
STORING OREO MUDDY BUDDIES
Allow the Oreo muddy buddies to cool completely before storing in an airtight container. This will keep at room temperature for up to 4 days.
Giving it time to fully set and storing it away from moisture (like the fridge) will help this cookies-and-cream treat maintain that crisp texture.
